  1. NEWS Implementation Plan (http://wec.gsfc.nasa.gov/ip/index.html#ip): This document was prepared by the NEWS Science Integration Team (NSIT) and selected guests about 1 year ago. We need to develop an action plan to update, review, and eventually publish this plan.
  2. NEWS Product & Discovery Abstracts (http://wec.gsfc.nasa.gov/abstracts/): We have posted all the NEWS project abstracts, and encourage you to review them. Please take special note of required areas of collaboration to be discussed at the GISS meeting.
  3. NEWS tasks & gaps (Click here for the Excel spreadsheet - 98 KB): The NSIT has done a preliminary mapping of the current funded NEWS investigations against the NEWS-IP tasks. We request that each NEWS team re-evaluate this mapping so that we have a better assessment of the NEWS gaps and needs. Please forward your revisions to Debbie Belvedere (debbie@iges.org.)
  4. GEWEX NEWS Article: Jared Entin and Paul Houser prepared a short GEWEX article describing the NEWS program and vision, (PDF, 192 KB) which may be a good overview and introduction to orient you. As part of the Friday activities, Jared solicited opinions on the realism of this vision and potential alternative perspectives.

Other NEWS Information

NEWS Science Integration Team Point of Contact (POC)
The NSIT-POC assigned to your project should have made contact with you and negotiated the science content of your project based on your projects reviews, mapping against the NEWS-IP, and integration with the rest of the NEWS team. They should also have discussed upcoming tasks that will be needed prior to the GISS meeting, including defining needs and interfaces between projects and the NSIT, revising the NEWS "GAP" table, and revisions to the NEWS-IP, among others. After the POC is satisfied with the science revisions, they should forward the recommendations to Jared to handle the budget negotiations and funding arrangements. If you have not completed this process, please work with your POC, Jared, or Paul Houser to get this processes finalized soon. You can see your POC's name on the GISS agenda.

NEWS Project Flexibility
As stated in the NRA, selected NEWS investigations will be expected to interact proactively with other NEWS investigators to optimize progress toward integrating NASA Earth Science Enterprise System components to make decisive progress toward the NEWS challenge. This will require some modification of investigators' tasks to optimize integration (i.e. identify and eliminate areas of potential overlap) and fill NEWS team gaps as they become apparent. This will require frequent communication via telephone conferences and by attending at least two (TBD) NEWS team meetings per year. A required NEWS team kick-off meeting was already held on Sept. 7-9, at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City.

NSIT Defined
A NEWS Science Integration Team has been established by the Associate Administrator to serve and enable the integration of your science activities with other NEWS investigations and other NASA research foci and activities. The NSIT will serve as an interface to NASA system components, and to coordinate and integrate the results of the NEWS product- and discovery-driven investigations to provide a pathway for the results of NEWS investigations to be implemented and retained as NASA system components. The NSIT will develop and provide shared NEWS services such as information technology, communication, and planning that will be designed to enhance cross-project collaboration and integration. The current members of the NSIT are: Robert Schiffer (UMBC), Eni Njoku (NASA-JPL), Adam Schlosser (MIT), Bing Lin (NASA-LaRC), Bill Rossow (NASA-GSFC-GISS), Bill Lapenta (NASA-MSFC), Paul Houser (GMU-CREW), and Jared Entin (NASA-HQ). Paul Houser serves at the NEWS project scientist, and Jared Entin serves as the NEWS project manager.
